ABSTRACT

In the case of psychoanalytic treatment, the transference becomes the analyst’s tool in the work of analysis. The fact that all the parents are seen from the start alters the tenor of the transference. There is a tendency to install an information technology centre in neonatal resuscitation units, where rows of computers are built into a sort of control tower, pouring forth graphs and numbers, constantly updating on the condition of each patient, so that the doctor never needs to go near the incubator to find out how the babies are doing. Studies were undertaken focusing on the development of children who had not suffered obvious neurosensory or neuromotor sequelae. Their findings included social, emotional, and cognitive disturbances, behavioural difficulties, and problems in keeping up with their contemporaries at school that were significantly more severe than in the non-premature population.
