ABSTRACT

The representation has become more and more 'symbolical', small signs must suffice the artist to express very intense emotions and highly differentiated ideas, and the public is expected to understand them. The chapter discusses the various ways of object-representation, the objects were represented as isolated entities; nature was conceived as a collection or a conglomerate of separate, clearly defined and sharply delineated objects. Art began the representation of life and nature with the all-important contours which in a way distinguished and isolated each object from all others. The work of art is the external re-creation of this internal fantasy by the use of symbolic methods. Psycho-analysis has taught psychologists that as a rule highly ego-centred, narcissistic states are unstable because the tension in them is so great that they break down, disintegrate spontaneously even without any forceful attack from outside.
