ABSTRACT

Maria Emilia Pozzi discusses the piece of work with Somers family, whom Maria Emilia refers to as the Somers and their four-year-old boy, Craig. Maria Emilia says that the work with these parents was particularly interesting, because it guided them to help Craig to catch up on the developmental stages of the first two years of his life, which he had missed out on due to major events. Mother had suffered from severe post natal depression (PND) for which she had been treated. Craig was born with a hereditary genital deformity, which had required a number of operations during his first three years of life. These parents proved to be particularly concerned, committed, and keen to learn about their child's psychological functioning. Maria Emilia's work on the parent–child relationship and on understanding the child's unusual habits, was supported and made possible by mother's own counselling.
