ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a clinical case analysed in the light of the psychopathology of work. M.S. had spontaneously consulted a doctor of his own accord a fortnight ago, as he felt like he was “going crazy”. M.S. spoke at length about his work: “this trade, it’s a bit of a love/hate relationship”, he specifically emphasises the difference between indoor and outdoor worksites. M.S. finds himself increasingly alone in the face of risk in his work. The arrival of his family during this same period and the birth of his third daughter exacerbate his psychological difficulties. M.S. says that he had been jealous of his father, who often carried out painting jobs, and that he had been drawn to the colours. It is during time spent at a construction site in Corsica, run by a family friend that M.S. decides to stay in France. M.S. underscores the disappearance of the everyday conviviality, cohesion thus being undermined by the unidentified “squealers”.
