ABSTRACT

The second Employment Tribunal was triggered because of the injustice I experienced with Black and ethnic minority clinicians on returning from exile. However, when I tried to take legal action I was overwhelmed with emotions around betrayal by people I perceived to be my own, and I regressed. This painful experience demonstrates what happens when one regresses in the racial arena and how this quickly gets hooked into similar past non-racial experiences within the family. Hopefully this account will help therapists and counsellors understand the process of regression and how one needs to work with the parallel processes of past and present colliding. Understanding the impact of this collision is important in containing clients’ distress and facilitating them in working safely through their regression.
