ABSTRACT

The research I carried out explores the responses of trainee counsellors to some of the factors that influence change in a counsellor’s ability to work with someone of a different skin colour. The opening quotation by Nelson Mandela captures my philosophy about working together, Blacks and Whites, rather than blaming one race for another race’s misfortunes. It is important that we explore the racial attitudes, beliefs, stereotypical thinking, and prejudices we have internalized and see how they interfere with our work with clients. How can we, as counsellors and therapists, work with those of different skin colour effectively?
