ABSTRACT

The research supports the hypothesis that if we become more aware and accepting of our unconscious racism we will be more effective in working with difference and in penetrating beyond skin colour. We become more able to bond with our clients. Gorman (2006) states that the therapist/patient bond is the foundation to the patient improving. However, he acknowledges “some degree of mistrust” due to “historical factors” and that the therapist needs to develop skills to deal with this so as to build trust and develop a therapeutic alliance. The patient needs to feel held (Bion) and contained (Winnicott). The trainee also needs to feel held and contained by his/her training institution through training (theory), supervision (practice) and personal therapy (personal development).
