ABSTRACT

Les announced when he began therapy that he wanted help because he was a successful coordinator of sales for a big business firm and was afraid of flying. In the therapy, Les went over the story of his life. Les threw himself into therapy with determination and fervour, as he did with all his projects. Les married Terry, who liked the good life but was very naturally her own person. Terry and Les fought a lot. Her moods expressed a discontent that was part of the family atmosphere. Les was determined to link inner with outer reality. He wanted to be able to express affection, but also terror. There was something grandiose and self-serving about Les’s beating Neville by himself. Love of life and work fit better because he was able to link materialism with personal values. Les carved out a place in which personal being had more of a say, in which personal identity mattered.
