ABSTRACT

The Cartesian distinction between mind-body is one version of a dualism that runs through cultures in many times and places. There is belief in spirits of ancestors, the Great Spirit, the Spirit of Spirits, a soul that antedates and survives death, eternal mind. Generations have their fashions and styles of relating to capacities: mind over matter, matter over mind, brawn and brain. Turn the kaleidoscope; get a new state of being, another mind-body mix, and another slant on being body-mind-spirit, another turn of the feeling-thinking-envisioning self. In therapy, Lynn and Les got a chance to turn the mind-body kaleidoscope until they hit on mixes that enabled them to move on with their lives. With therapeutic help, Les saw his mind going one way; his body another, and experienced the tension of his predicament in a premonitory way. Mind-body capacities and self-other dramas keep pulsating and structuring one another.
