ABSTRACT

This chapter shows some phases in the treatment of a young woman, and the place of resilience in her therapy. In presenting the case of Mariana, the chapter describes how the therapy enabled her to reconnect with the original basis of resilience that later experiences had jeopardized and almost destroyed. Mariana, a Middle-Eastern woman in her thirties, referred herself for therapy. In the first few months of therapy, Mariana struggled to grasp and talk about the material she had been avoiding over a long period. From the beginning, Mariana talked about her therapy as very meaningful in her life. In therapy, she has an opportunity to look at this vulnerability, makes good use of the opportunity, and recovers some of her resilience. Mariana’s new-found calm led to a reintegration of herself and a better understanding of the object world, whose invasive omnipotence felt less powerful.
