ABSTRACT

This chapter begins the journey into the underlying depths hidden beneath the overt behaviours described as school aggression and violence. It looks at the connections between experiences of violence and expressions of psyche. The chapter is an introduction to some of the depth psychological methods, and in particular those that can assist us in delving more deeply into the more unknown aspects of school violence and related experiences. Depth psychology is the study of that which is not accessible to direct observation. Until Sigmund Freud’s time the notion of the unconscious was a general concept used to refer to deeper mechanisms underlying the conscious mind. Jung describes individuation as a regulating principle acting as an integrative, unifying power, drawing attention to its presence through dream images and symbols. Hillman attempts to reconnect depth psychology to the mythical perspective held within the images of soul, which perspective he claims lies at the base of any psychology.
