ABSTRACT

The following paper is based on a talk—his first one on the subject of group analysis—which Foulkes gave to the British Psycho-Analytical Society in April 1946. This was just after leaving the army, and a large part of the paper deals with his crucial experiences at the Northfield Military Neurosis Centre. Since this period has been extensively described in Foulkes’ 1948 book and elsewhere, the following account is considerably shortened in order to avoid repetition.
