ABSTRACT

The feedback from insurers and professional organisations is that complaints are on the increase. In private practice counsellors are more vulnerable because they are isolated and less well supported. This chapter looks at how counsellors can overcome and minimise these problems and ensure that they are well equipped for private practice. It considers some issues that specifically arise for the private counsellor. Working as a counsellor in an organisation is very different as they have meeting times, informal colleague support and the structure of the organisation to support them. All of that disappears when counsellor set up their own practice. Many people follow the BACP “Ethical framework for good practice in counselling and psychotherapy”. Continuing professional development (CPD) is very important as a way of ensuring that counsellor continue to provide the highest quality of informed practice.
