ABSTRACT

Individuals in positions of public office feel trapped from the inside and the outside. The fear of being caught, along with the fantasised humiliation that would ensue, gets them into an unparalleled and overlapping position of simultaneous risk-taking and excitement. It may be more useful and effective to make a sort of classification of these sexual predicaments bearing in mind the question of whether or not they are punishable by law. This may provide us with clues about the internal processes that draw individuals who know of their vulnerabilities to seek power, control, and authority and, in so doing, risk being "publically uncovered", resulting in humiliation and "disgrace" that will have an impact both on them and on their extended family. Obviously this is both relevant and linked to external power, since, as stated in the section on encapsulation, it implies not only a split from the rest of the personality but also a private lie.
