ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author proposes clinical experience which leads her to believe that there are important differences between transference love in men and in women in terms of both its nature and manifestations. She describes Norbert which enabled her to understand better the reasons for this difference between the sexes. That the pilot always took Norbert to America, the adored continent, the "promised land" as he put it, where, in reality, on every trip, he felt intense jubilation on landing is a further indication of the incestuous character of the analytical journey for him. The first manifestations of Norbert's love-transference, however genuine they were, lacked a dimension which was given to them subsequently by the introjection of the father's penis. The transference love in the positive Oedipus complex is visibly used as a protection and defence against the negative Oedipus complex.
