ABSTRACT

A. Bergman states: “that the psychotic child blocks the mother’s capacity to enter into this special state of motherhood”. Bergman writes that mothers of autistic babies are often “doubly traumatized, first by the deprivation of their relationships to their own mothers and then by the profound frustration and disappointment of not being able to be a good mother”. Autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) is understood as a compilation of symptoms that develop because of a fundamental yet diverse neurological deficit in emotional communication and information processing. Asperger syndrome (AS) is seen by some to be a personality or character type that is clearly distinct from ASD while others propose that AS is on a diagnostic spectrum with autism. Children with AS have difficulty assimilating experiences into a coherent narrative of their world. The AS patient will often be filled with envy, contend with severe anxiety, and be overwhelmed with hostile aggression, but must also cope with neurobiological deficiencies.
