ABSTRACT

Ihave always felt something of an outsider, being of Swedish parentage in London. My father was a timber merchant, who came to London from Sweden before the First World War with £70 in his pocket to try and find work. We are of Huguenot stock, coming to Sweden in about 1640. My father was without parents from a very young age. He came from a noble background. He was one of eleven children. He turned up in Hampstead when he was about seventeen and found digs there. Within a very short time he was doing pretty well in the timber brokerage business.
