ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book introduces Emily, a therapist newly learning emotionally focused therapy (EFT). It gives a brief history of the development of EFT. The book presents the step and stages of the EFT map for change. It outlines the research validating EFT as an evidence-based approach. Emily’s work with these couples will reappear. It anticipates that at least one scenario, if not all three, will be similar to the challenges one face with their own couples. The book discusses the enhancement of the couple therapy practice and gives an overview of how information is organised. It presents the therapeutic tools that are found in the nine EFT process research studies that have carefully examined the actual change processes in therapy. The book concludes with scenarios of three different couples being seen by EFT therapist, Emily.
