ABSTRACT

Having a clear picture of a couple’s secure bond—the end point of emotionally focused therapy (EFT) therapy—can ground an EFT therapist in an encouraging picture of the destination of this work. This chapter gives an overview of Stage 3 consolidation, where the therapist guides couples through integrating and consolidating the changes they have made so that they can continue to shape and grow their love relationship. It discusses what EFT therapists see and hear during these steps, what therapists and partners do in Steps 8 and 9, and how (the manner in which) these steps are taken. Stage 3 is a time of celebration, satisfaction, and happiness. Partners collaborate to solve pragmatic problems and, in spite of their differences, create ways to keep their secure bond of love alive. The prime marker indicating readiness for Stage 3 integration and consolidation is the new sense of safety and connection that partners exude and discuss.
