ABSTRACT

A management principle highlights some of the aims of a programme for children of transsexual parents. Most of the transsexual parents were biological fathers becoming women; the majority of the children have been pre-teenage. Some of the children continue to live with the transsexual parent and the transsexual's spouse as one parent gender metamorphoses. There is concern that children of transsexual parents who are aware of the gender-transition process may manifest sexual identity confusion. Transsexual parents and their marital partners react in several ways to the transsexual parent's decision to change sex, all of which may put their children at risk. Some transsexual parents continue to live with their children during the gender transition, or they may keep in contact but from a separate residence. There is concern that children of transsexual parents who are aware of the gender-transition process may manifest sexual identity confusion. The chapter describes the experience of "Frances", who is the child of a female-to-male transsexual.
