ABSTRACT

The "internal supervisor" tunes in during a session to how the relationship is going, what might be conveyed unconsciously by the supervisee, and the impact of what they are doing together. Preparation for a supervision session also calls on the internal supervisor of the supervisee, to decide what to bring. Developing the internal supervisor as an inner companion who is always there is a little like having an Everyman within who "will go with thee, and be thy guide / In thy most need to go by thy side". The skills of the internal supervisor are largely those that capitalize on observation and "inclusion", as well as reflection on the intersubjective experience of supervision. The supervisee who experiences the supervisor's process over and over, learns to self-supervise as she develops her own internal witness, critic, and commentator. The supervisor can also note if their practice becomes more flexible and responsive to different styles of learning and views of the world.
