ABSTRACT

As new parents we spend a great deal of time choosing what kind of birth we would like. We are also likely to spend some time gathering information about practical day-today issues such as feeding, bathing, nappy-changing, sleeping etc., and adapting our lives to such changes. Having a baby represents a fundamental change in your life and it is very common to experience it as a form of culture shock in the midst of the happiness of being a parent. Crying is the most important mechanism newborn babies have to communicate with the world. Most parents and adults can determine whether a baby’s cry indicates anger or pain and parents can distinguish the cry of their own baby better than those of a stranger’s baby. Parents, particularly the ones who spend much time with their child, are the experts and should trust their instincts, these being very strong.
