ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to help counsellors, psychotherapists, and psychologists find their way to the door of a professional who is used to helping those who suffer from overwhelming levels of anxiety. Counsellors are generally trained over a two to three year period, attending college, university, or a private training body on a part-time basis. Counselling training consists of a number of different modalities: the theories then underpin the way one learns to work with clients. Psychotherapists also belong to the same differing theoretical modalities as do counsellors. Chartered clinical psychologists have undergone a different type of training programme from counsellors and psychotherapists. Clinical psychologists generally charge more than psychotherapists or counsellors, and their fee structure ranges from £80 to £150 per hour. Counsellors and psychotherapists abide by strict codes of conduct regarding confidentiality, and a good counsellor will always fully explain the boundaries around confidentiality, and conditions regarding cancellation at a first meeting.
