It's just that in some cases there have been problems with personal relations with the supervisors or the institution, so the need for them to work with someone in particular can come up. There are several factors that should be considered, one of the most important of which is to know all the available supervisors. Freudian theory may be one of the primary supports, but it is not the sum of current psychoanalysis. One of the basic texts is the The Interpretation of Dreams, which is very important as he mentions the basic outline of psychoanalysis; in the first part of that text are Freud's main discoveries, which the author thinks are essential for students. The author has always favoured that candidates presented psycho-historic studies and promoted everybody to write a psycho-historic report, with the intention of getting them used to applying psychoanalytic theories in their literary studies.
