ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights how details of family interaction affect relationships both inside and outside of the family. Many people find themselves having to balance what may feel like two contradictory models, one that is reflected in the media and society outside the family, and a second one that connects with the family at home. Experiences in the previous generation may also play a part in the way brothers and sisters deal with difference. Each child occupies a unique position in the family. Some of the 'stories' may be shared, but there may be as many perspectives on any issue as there are people in the family. Most families have to cope with upsets in their lives, and show resilience and flexibility in helping their members to respond to change. The feedback loops operate at all levels of human interaction, from the personal to the political, and involve both verbal and non-verbal communication.
