ABSTRACT

The general approach to reading is to ask people how they have been challenged by what they have read. In this respect, it is congruent with the feedback process, modelling the theory of the relationship between beliefs and behaviour. Writing is an extremely useful way for people to clarify their own thoughts, regardless of whether they feel they can write or have any experience of writing. The people usually stipulate that they should write no more than a page, so that it looks like a manageable task and so that it forces them to distil their own ideas succinctly. In some of our courses, the teachers include the requirement of a written position paper at the end of a term or of the course. A position paper is a paper in which people are asked to clarify their own position in relation to the various important theoretical issues in family therapy.
