ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the Routine, Environment, Stimulation control, and Thinking (REST) programme in detail. The four stage programme is designed to be used by some patients to improve their sleep by taking home information sheets and working on the recommended practices in their own time. The chapter focuses on an assessment form that comprises the starting point for collecting information from the person who is not sleeping well. The assessment then examines which types of insomnias may be affecting the client. A good sleeping environment will optimise one's chances of getting a good night of sleep, but a bad one can seriously affect their sleep. Treatment can be tailored to individuals to meet their specific needs. First described by Spielman, Saskin and Thorpy in 1987 sleep restriction therapy (SRT) has been used very effectively for the treatment and management of insomnia in a wide range of individuals presenting with sleep problems.
