ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the potential application of Routine, Environment, Stimulation control, and Thinking (REST) and associated psychological and behavioural treatments for a range of additional populations notably those presenting with more complex physical and/or mental health conditions. Exploring the history and current experiences of older people as they present is essential in teasing out which issues are central to a sleep problem, and these can be usefully and effectively treated using the principles of the REST programme. Two of the most common presentations with respect to child sleep are that of the occurrence of nightmares and sleepwalking. Sleep-related eating disorder is classified as a parasomnia, where eating during the night occurs as complex somnambulism and is usually beyond the awareness of the individual at the time of the behavioural occurrence. Sleep disturbances are very common after brain injury, but again there is little research evidence detailing the sleep experiences and certainly the treatment of sleeping problems in these people.
