ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses pertains to conflictual differences between one culture founded on principles of Fundamentalism and another entrenched in Modernity. Ideas from the information sciences have influenced the evolution of certain ideas in contemporary psychoanalysis. Terrorist cells have little difficulty finding recruits in tumultuous Middle East where it is common for young men to live with little sense of hope for the future. Cultures that wash away semblances of class hierarchy, authority and dogma and promote an “anyone can have a shot at making it” message have been effective in diluting obvious class divisions, particularly in the USA. The tragic events of September 11th bring to the attention of psychoanalysts around the world with great force a spectrum of issues from the macro to the micro. With regard to the micro or personal dimension it is important to remember how in trauma, the assault of the unimaginable preys on the trauma victim’s subsequent imaginings.
