ABSTRACT

There are a number of scientists whose work has had a profound effect on the Bilateral Affective Reprocessing of Thoughts (BART) approach to therapeutic work with patients and clients. This chapter discusses the interaction of endocrine, immune, and nervous systems with the culture medium of the body and mind, or gut-brain, heart-brain, and head brain. Exposure to toxic stress causes these body substrates to release stress hormones into the bloodstream. The symbol for "OM", recorded in India around 3,500 bc, is said to represent the universal void of creation. It is possible that the purpose of the chants of OM before, during, and after meditation was to increase the energy of the chakras, perhaps to assist with DNA replication and protein synthesis. This would fit in with the model for BART psychotherapy. Exposure to the gamma frequency of bilateral cerebellar stimulation would increase the enzyme telomerase, thereby diminishing the deleterious effect of telomere shortening on DNA replication.
