ABSTRACT

In this section, the reader is introduced to the use of analytic large groups as a method of exploring the social unconscious of a whole social system in a historical context. The large group technique, as part of a process consultancy, combined with other reflective techniques, helps a change process to be successful because it opens the boundary between one-to-one coaching, small group team support, and the development of the whole system. The large group space adds value during a process of transition and massive change because it offers a secure place for the whole system to meet and reflect on the emotional, intellectual, and practical impact of internally generated strategic projects or significant changes in the outside world. Most leaders and members fear the large group, or they do not trust it. Group analysts can model, through their practice, how it is possible to pacify the destructive forces within a large group and the “as if” organisation and redirect defensive energy into creative and constructive exchanges and action.
