ABSTRACT

Patients come for psychoanalysis because they wish to be free. They want to be liberated from those inner forces that limit their freedom. There are two kinds of activity in human beings: mobile practical action and emotional action. Psychoanalysis teaches that most of us hate being children, stepping forth into the unknown, having to seek the help of those more experienced. Wilfred Bion saw freedom as being elemental to psychoanalysis and any erosion of freedom within psychoanalysis being a betrayal of its true nature. The goal of psychoanalysis is the transformation of those obstructions to freedom into vehicles for the achievement of it. A living thing, as opposed to a dead thing, has a creative principle within: the source of life is in itself. The exercise of this creative principle is synonymous with freedom. An interpretation may free a person from the grip of imprisoning forces but not without anguish of spirit.
