ABSTRACT

Consulting will seem to fit quite well with the particular phase of the process, but in truth they are very much part of the single, multi-faceted stone. This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book describes some key issue for consulting, regardless of the particular phase of the consulting relationship. The key issues are: speaking one's mind" openly and truly—without fear of the consequences; exploration—listening to and interpreting whatever the client brings; self-monitoring and self-directing; being with and facilitating change; and letting go of the client and the client's fortunes. The book addresses Shakespeare's King Lear in consulting. King Lear, more so than Hamlet, Othello, or Macbeth, deals with issues found in management and consulting is reflected in the language used in the play: words such as manage, lead, advise, counsel, and comfort appear in King Lear much more frequently than in the other tragedies.
