ABSTRACT

Mirroring the relapses and temptations that the client and the client organization may experience, the consultant may feel many temptations in denouement or resolution phase. One temptation is to try to continue "making a difference", explaining again and again the great plan and the way to proceed. This temptation is counterproductive if the consultant continues intervening when the client is already capable of implementing the change himself. Aristotle used the word catharsis—purification—to describe what the audience, in the grips of pity and terror, goes through in this phase of the drama. The fourth Act of King Lear is full of unexpected turns of events and fundamental changes in the characters. As for King Lear: the development of his madness is one of Shakespeare's great achievements in this tragedy. In fourth phase, an organization starts to function in a truly different way; the initiative of the client and the involvement of the consultant have achieved an effect.
