ABSTRACT

This chapter mainly focuses on love and hate. Bion defines three types of basic links, and designates them: K for the link of Knowledge and the desire to know; L for the link of Love; and H for the link of Hate. Much has been written about K function, and the link it designates is considered complex, challenging, and more highly developed than love and hate. When Bion first wrote about links, he said that he chose to include all the different types of links under three categories: L, H, and K, because these comprise all existing possibilities. They include envy and gratitude, depression and guilt, anxiety, and sexuality. In Bion’s terms, Foulkes in fact attributes great therapeutic power to links. Undoubtedly, both Foulkes and Bion would agree that links are the building blocks of the mental function and of relationships between people.
