ABSTRACT

This chapter begins by relating an experience that illuminates the challenge of bridging attention to the realities of destructive violence with attention to unconscious psychic processes. Understanding the mind becomes the utmost challenge when horrors occur. The chapter presents ways to link with others for the purpose of empowerment so that they may inform and act with the hope of creating and constructing the means to fight violence. Also, examining the mind in times of violence is crucial. Active reflection must accompany taking action. The chapter presents the bridges between those who inform and take action, and those who work to understand the forces in the psyche. Both forms of addressing the horror of violence against women are crucial, and opening communication between these two very different modes of work furthers understanding and efforts to bring change. Central to both forms of addressing the horror is the place of the witness.
