ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the psychological impact of culture as meaning in coaching practice, making sense of the landscape and the implications for the future. A systems approach appears to be the most appropriate for cross-cultural coaching. This takes account of the cultural self and its roots in the theory of the dialogical self further acknowledges that there are a multitude of external influences that have an impact on beliefs, values, and behaviours. The Cross-Cultural Kaleidoscope is a model that has been created to take account of the fact that our culture has distinct meanings for individuals yet is subjected to influences and pressures from the external social environment as part of a complex adaptive system. The model has been used in practice by cross-cultural coaches and found to contribute to increased culturally derived awareness and to the facilitation of culturally appropriate responsibility.
