ABSTRACT

This chapter describes clinical work with some one hundred and fifty individuals/couples seen in a psychoanalytic practice devoted to emotional issues related to the life cycle of reproduction. It explores some psychological effects of egg-donation on the triangle of protagonists. The chapter illustrates the complexity of feelings involved, it bring detailed material from a critical point for one recipient, who at the time of the reported session had been in twice weekly therapy for four years and the extraordinary gift of eggs between women is not an easy one to accept. Her initial exploration of conscious reactions is structured by her desperate need/wish/desire to be "hospitable" to this offer despite the enormity of forfeit. In reality, Reproductive Technology may assist the mother to act as surrogate, carrying her daughter’s fertilized embryos to term, thus giving birth to her own grandchildren. Egg donation marks a profound change in relationship between women, by catalysing a life-cycle transition.
