ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses some ways in which awareness and recognition of bodily experience can be deepened, and the role embodied movement can play in enabling greater access to emotional and psychological processes. It begins by providing two descriptive vignettes that show how deepening one's access to bodily experience can enable a deeper contact with oneself. A young woman relatively new to movement therapy came to a session approaching a holiday break feeling very agitated. She felt she wanted to "develop movement vocabulary" for expressing these feelings. Movement, taken in a broad sense, is always the basis for change. Attending to physical sensation and movement can support recognition of psychic states, and provide a way of relating to them so that they may become more flexible and transparent. The chapter provides more than a descriptive discussion of the various themes; rather, it is the author's hope and intention to convey an experiential feel for the language of movement.
