ABSTRACT

In the grail legend, Merlin is the central character in the myth, representing wholeness. Le Morte d’Arthur's tutor, he stays behind the scenes, the commander of events, and visionary of the future. Merlin is the incarnation of the divinity that is closest to nature. Since he is of demonic and human origin, he also represents the unconscious of humans. The initial development of humans refers to the three chakras—eat, reproduce, and have power—coinciding with their animal and earthly nature. The fourth chakra brings the don of the heart and mercy, the greatest inheritance from the great goddess. These two natures, antagonistic in themselves, dualities in the same creature, seek coniunctio. Merlin’s nature is similar to that of Christ’s: divine and earthly, mortal and immortal, God and man. As such, Merlin is also an expression of the grail, and at the same time the search for the chalice.
