ABSTRACT
Many decades ago when I was teaching a course in psychology, I asked the students to pair up and then to gaze uninterruptedly into each other’s eyes for several minutes. This proved to be enormously intriguing for some students and impossibly difficult for others, and all of us were surprised at the extremes of emotion that it provoked.
