ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author explores the processes of change and balance as reflected in the hexagrams for the contemporary reader. Progress through life is similarly open to misinterpretation, frequently harmless, occasionally dangerous. We can only measure our progress against something or somebody else. Naturally, we would like to know how to create the conditions that make progress possible. The appearance of the sun moving through the sky is, of course, an illusion created by our own movement as the earth rotates around that body. It is clear that the apparently effortless progress represented by the sun rising over the earth in the hexagram has been achieved through a combination of vision, courage, reflection, and, importantly, the support and respect of one's fellow human beings. Another consideration raised by this hexagram is that of work. The choices we make around work will contribute fundamentally to the point of balance we seek to maintain in life.
