ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author explores the processes of change and balance as reflected in the hexagrams for the contemporary reader. The word, 'deliverance' has an almost Biblical ring to it. A dangerous moment has passed, dividing time into 'before' and 'after'. It is appropriate to pause at such a moment, naming and acknowledging the significance of what has happened, experiencing our relief, or gratitude, or sadness before moving on. The danger represented by lower primary trigram Kan has passed and new growth – Chen – has already started. If we fail to read such signs, not wishing to recognize the gathering danger, we may wish afterwards that we had been more attentive or courageous. The earlier we are able to recognize the signs of such a looming 'storm', the less destructive will it be. Li symbolizes this need for clear-eyed understanding and enlightenment, while Kan indicates that although the storm has passed there remains work to be done.
