ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author explores the processes of change and balance as reflected in the hexagrams for the contemporary reader. The hexagram Revolution portrays the powerful forces of change: upper primary trigram Tui, signifying the Lake or enclosed water, has Li, Fire below it. In addition, nuclear trigram Sun, Wind or Wood, increases the effect of the fire and, finally, Chien, strongly ascending towards Heaven, draws the wind and fire upwards. Relationships between individuals are both similar to and different from those pertaining to the two elements, fire and water. The individual who could predict seasonal changes and the outcome of events long before less observant individuals might notice the relevant patterns and influences in the heavens or around them on earth was seen as a Mage, a Sage. Such men and women were relied upon to tell others when crops should be planted or rituals performed, and thus they carried within them the first 'calendar'.
