ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author explores the processes of change and balance as reflected in the hexagrams for the contemporary reader. There are two ways of considering 'Abundance': the first is as an external set of favourable conditions and the second is as an internal capacity or predisposition. The first is the more traditional understanding, and is reflected in the attributes of brightness, even brilliance, and energetic motion associated with Li and Chen. The promised abundance lies in the future – good crops and the possibility of health and sufficiency for the family or community. The second way of approaching this hexagram is through its nuclear trigrams, Sun and Tui. As wood, Sun can put down its yielding 'roots' grow almost anywhere, slowly and with perseverance. Tui represents the cheerful person whose readiness to experience joy can sustain and support her through difficult times.
