ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author explores the processes of change and balance as reflected in the hexagrams for the contemporary reader. Huan/Dispersion pictures a warm wind blowing over frozen water – ice – causing it to thaw and break up. It suggests the possibility of deep blockages or 'frozen' states being liberated as they are touched and freed by a new understanding. Sun represents wood as well as wind and, combined with flowing water as represented by Kan, a new image emerges, of a wooden boat on the water. The building of a boat used to require many hours of communal labour with a high degree of communication and co-operation. As the seasonal ice is thawed and then reabsorbed into the land or seas only to reform the following winter, so the dispersion of frozen or unwanted energies is only part of the process of embracing more of life.
