ABSTRACT

There is a part of the prenatal and genetic diagnostics (PND) that makes extremely difficult demands on pregnant women in the decision-making process because of its special status amongst the diagnostic procedures. The conflict between mother and daughter described here is not rare, and comes up when the mother is so caught up in her conflicts that the daughter is used as a projective surface for her own reproach against her parents for being irresponsible. As a result, the girl is exposed to overwhelming anxieties and feelings from which the parents themselves should be protecting her by taking on responsibility. The development of the internal and external freedom and independence that are necessary for mature decision-making process is still often not conceded to many women even today, and/or there is a lack of awareness about how necessary it is to give them support in this effort.
