ABSTRACT

This chapter tries to emphasize several aspects that seem to be relevant in the context of prenatal diagnostics, especially when a new test method is in the process of introduction. In 2006, the Swedish Riksdag passed a law about “genetic integrity”, focusing on how to deal with new and more sophisticated prenatal diagnostic methods. At the core of the new law is that general information about prenatal diagnostic tests will be offered to all pregnant women. The majority of women preferred a screening test for Down’s syndrome before undergoing invasive testing. They also wanted to be informed as early as possible and preferred screening in the first trimester, which is exactly what scientists and medical doctors also want to achieve: early and secure testing. However, there is a significant difference with regard to the aims of genetic prenatal diagnostics.
