ABSTRACT

Discussing Possibility necessarily obliges us to take into consideration what may, upon first glance, seem to be its opposite: that is, the concept of Impossibility. It is absolutely true that individuation is unthinkable outside of the category of Possibility, what is offered by the meeting of unique historical elements, which bring to life an inimitable life story. Jung looked at the individuation process in its advanced phases, managing to make use of the immense imaginal and symbolic range offered by alchemy. To state that individuation begins with the emergence of the consciousness from the undifferentiated, with the essential contribution made by the caregivers who authorise this process, constellating the Possibility. Makes the events surrounding the birth of the consciousness crucial, without falling into another determinism, through which the individual historical events which happen to the subject during childhood become the factor which promotes development, in accordance with certain foreseeable directions.
