ABSTRACT

This chapter talks about Carol. Her mother has been advised by the school to seek professional help. The phrasing of the letter clearly indicated that the doctor was agreeing to the referral, whilst reserving his views about the need for such a consultation: Carol’s school had recommended help, and Mrs C was prepared to accept this, so the doctor complied. An appointment was sent for Carol and her parents to come to the clinic. In fact, only Carol and her mother attended for the appointment. After the usual steps of greeting them and trying to make them feel comfortable, Carol moved towards the table with toys and Mrs C told to the author that her daughter had two different problems: her disturbed sleep and her “impossible behaviour” at home and at school. The author explains that what had occurred to him was the possibility that, when interested in something, Carol was able to concentrate and play in a constructive way.
